Department of Transportation. With his brother Thomas, Joseph operated a paint store near Trout Run for about two years. In Oct 1978 he began working for the Milwaukee Railroad in the Bridges and Building Department. Beverly and Joseph Sheridan Left: Jared, Right: Jordan. 1981 Joseph was married 7 Sep 1974 to Beverly Ann Kampman at St. James Lutheran Church, Allison, IA by Pastor Lowell Koch. Beverly was born at Waverly, IA to Heyo and Anna Kampman of Allison. She was baptized and confirmed at St. James Lutheran Church. Beverly attended the Allison schools and graduated from Allison-Bristow High School in 1969. She was a member of the Drama Club and played clarinet in the concert and marching bands. She attended North Iowa Community College in Mason City for two years studying accounting and bookkeeping. She became a secretary for the Iowa Kempel Insurance Co. in Mason City and then did bookkeeping at J.C. Penney Co. in Mason City. Beverly moved to Decorah where she worked at Northeast Iowa Farm Service for about five years. She did home day care work for about seven years and worked for a short time at Donlons Drug Store and Wal-Mart, plus one year a AAA Travel Agency. Since 1989 she has been employed at Northeast Iowa Community Action. Joseph and Beverly have two sons: Jared Joseph (b. in LaCrosse, Wl) and Jordan John (b. in Decorah). Both were confirmed at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church by Pastor Paul Hasvold — Jared on 7 Nov 1993 and Jordan on 29 Oct 1995. The boys attend the Decorah schools. Jared is a senior and Jordan a sophomore. Jared played trumpet in the Junior High Band and Jordan played trombone. They both work at the Decorah Swimming Pool and do yard work in the neighborhood. Jared also works at the Decorah Theater. Sheridan, Raymond and Sydell (Smalley)(Ransome Bolson) Sydell Smalley was born 18 Aug 1922 to Ray and Elsie (Young) Smalley on a farm about seven miles north of Decorah known as the Koppen place. (Dr. Lannon from Mabel, MN was the attending physician.) Sydell was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Locust, IA. She attended Canoe No. 2, Van Vliet and Turner No. 9 schools. When the family moved to Decorah, she attended 8th grade and graduated from Decorah High School in 1941, having taken the Normal Training course. She was a member of the Froebel Club. Sydell taught three years at the Springwater School, five miles north of Decorah on the Locust Road. She joined the WACS during World War II and served two to three years. Later she worked at a factory in Evanston, IL. While in the service she met Sgt. Raymond John Sheridan. Raymond spent five years in the military. Sydell and Raymond were married in Chicago. Raymond worked for a transit company. They had two sons, John and Thomas, who were born and baptized in Chicago. Sydell and Raymond moved to Decorah and lived for about a year with Sydell’s parents, the Ray Smalleys, at 222 Ohio Street. They had a third son, Joseph. Mr. Sheridan worked with his father-in-law, Mr. Smalley, as a carpenter and repair man. The war had taken its toll on Raymond and he became a mental casualty. He spent the remaining years of his life in government institutions in Illinois. Raymond was born 8 Jul 1915 and died 11 Sep 1990. He is buried in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah. John and Janet Sheridan Back: Toby, Chris and Lori. Sydell was left with three sons to care for, but she was fortunate to have loving and caring parents. The Ray Smalleys had two small homes built on Ohio Street — one for Sydell and her sons and one for themselves. Sydell worked at the Decorah Hospital and then in the Food Service Department at Luther College. She preferred working at the hospital and returned there to work until she was stricken with cancer. She died 9 Feb 1976 and is buried at Phelps Cemetery. Sydell walked many miles to and from work and only toward the end of her life did she own and drive a car.
